Whats the weather like when I want to come ?
The weather in BVI varies little throughout the year with most days like a beautiful summer day in the northern USA or England
Rainfall is mostly at night with the odd quick shower during the day
Check here for more details Note rainfall is given in mm with the wettest month having approximately 3.4 inches of rain and the driest 1 inch.
When is the rainy season ?
There isn't really one . rainfall varies little throughout the year - see above
When is it too cold to sit outside at night?
Never. Our restaurants do not have windows. [Your room does ]
How do I get to the Sugar Mill ?
From the USA or Canada
We recommend that you fly to San Juan Puerto Rico [ airport code SJU ] from any major US hub. Note there are direct flights from Toronto to San Juan PR and you can reach the Sugar Mill in a day without crazy early starts.
From San Juan take an Inter Caribbean - usually the cheapest and recommended or Cape Air [ nine seater Cessna] https://www.capeair.com or Seaborne [ larger planes] from San Juan to Beef Island Airport Tortola. [ Airport code EIS ] Flight time about 35 minutes.
You can check on flights from San Juan - Beef island and book at sky scanner.net. You can also check on a small airline not on sky scanner that flies SJU-EIS called Air Sunshine [www.airsunshine.com ] - they often have the last flight in the evening -small planes - great fun
From Beef Island take a taxi to Sugar Mill – all taxi drivers know where it is. Journey time is about 35 minutes. Fare is about $25 per person. We recommend you settle the amount of the fare before leaving the airport. Be aware that taxis are often shared and the taxi may stop at different points along the way so your journey time could be longer.
We offer a private transfer at $85 one way , $150 both ways. You can book this as part of the on line booking process.
On 5 star All Inclusive we will meet you at Beef Island Airport with private hotel transport.
Note - you can arrive in san Juan up to 5 -5.30 pm and make connection for a flight to Tortola as the last plane leaves at around 6 or 6.30 pm. For the route through St Thomas below you must arrive before 3.30 pm at St Thomas as the last ferry leaves at 5pm.
Fly to St Thomas US Virgin Islands. [ Airport code STT ] Non Stop Flights go from New York , Newark, Miami, Fort Lauderdale , Atlanta, Boston, Charlotte and other major hubs All the majors fly there as do Spirit – from Fort Lauderdale and Jet Blue – from various airports.
On arrival at St Thomas Charlotte Amalie Airport, take a taxi to Red Hook on St Thomas USVI [$15 a person] - 20 minutes journey.
Take a ferry from Red Hook to West End Tortola - they run up until 5 pm or so most days and sometimes 9 at night in high season - [ check with us beforehand ] - 30 minute trip - approximately $50 round trip.
Take a taxi from West End to Sugar Mill - 10 minutes, $10 or less per person. Taxis are abundant and everyone knows the Sugar Mill
On 5 star all inclusive we will meet you at West End ferry dock with private hotel transport.
Can I book the ferry in advance?
No. You cannot pre book ferries between St Thomas and Tortola. Buy tickets at the terminal. There may be a departure tax of $10 or so per person.
Which ferry company do you recommend?
All the ferry companies are pretty alike and we do not recommend one over another. Get on whichever one is running. But do not use Road Town Fast Ferry which does not
stop at West End. The ferry trip is part of your holiday, great views of St John and other islands.
Can I take a ferry from Charlotte Amalie instead of Red Hook?
Yes is it also possible to take a ferry from Charlotte Amalie the capital of St Thomas to West End Tortola. But it is not recommended. It is a longer ride and the last ferry goes earlier in the day.
Can I take a ferry to Road Town instead?
Do not take a ferry to Road Town Tortola that does not stop at West End. Road Town Fast Ferry does not stop at West End so do not use it except if there is no alternative. Get off all ferries at West End. [ West End is also sometimes known as Frenchman's ] Only if there is no alternative ferry should you go to Road Town which is much further away from the Sugar Mill.
Should you arrive too late for the ferry it is possible to take a water taxi. Dolphin Water
Taxis are here : call or text (340) 774-2628 , email: info@DolphinWaterTaxi.com
Rates are from about $350 from Charlotte Amalie /Red Hook to West End Tortola but
check with the company direct. If several share this can be quite economic and may be
cheaper than a hotel in St Thomas.
From the UK
KLM fly from most UK airports to Amsterdam in time to connect to their midday flight to St Maarten. From St Maarten fly Winair to Tortola. As an example a 9.00 am departure from Birmingham and you will arrive at the hotel in time for dinner at about 7-7.30.
It is also possible to fly to St Maarten from Paris with Air France.
there is also a possible route through Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Thompson fly there from the UK and there is direct flight from Santo Domingo to Tortola. Skyscanner.net usually shows these flights
Fly BA or Virgin to Antigua and take LIAT Airlines to Beef Island Tortola. http://www.liat.com
Also Inter Caribbean airlines have increasingly frequent flights from Antigua to Tortola. We recommend this airline over LIAT which has a poor record of leaving on time.
BVI Air Link also have flights. On Fridaya especially. Their website is here
Alternatively from the UK - fly via New York or Miami or Philadelphia or Charlotte , stay overnight and fly to St Thomas or Tortola via San Juan Puerto Rico next day- often less expensive and less stressful.
Fly from Paris or Amsterdam to St Martin [ St Maarten ]
Take LIAT http://www.liat.com or WinAir http://www.fly-winair.sx
to Beef Island Tortola.
Then take a taxi or transfer as above.
A l'hotel on parle Francais.
Note : we like the site skyscanner.com or skyscanner.net to plan air travel. You might too.
Check in time - 3.00pm - we always try to get you into your room earlier if possible
Check out time - 12 noon - we can provide a shower and towels for late departures
